Kenai River closing at midnight Saturday for king salmon fishing

Beginning at midnight Saturday, the Kenai River will close to king salmon fishing, including catch-and-release.

The emergency order from the Alaska Department of Fish & Game was issued Friday afternoon in an effort to conserve late-run king salmon escapement.

The department does not expect escapement to reach the sustainable goal of 15,000 to 30,000 fish, prompting its decision to close of the fishery Saturday night.

King salmon caught while fishing for other species may not be removed from the water and must be released immediately.
