Daughter tops mom in battle of Loans

Kinsey Loan got the best of her mom -- barely -- to win Friday's circuit race in the Tour of Anchorage bicycle stage race.

The Tour continues Saturday with two races at Point MacKenzie and concludes Sunday with a criterium on Martin Luther King Blvd.

Loan beat her mom, nine-time Tour of Anchorage champion Sheryl Loan, in a two-woman sprint finish at Kincaid Park. Both clocked times of 1 hour, 16 minutes, 41 seconds.

Richard Tilton won a five-man sprint to take the men's victory in 1:17:09.

For the Loans, the circuit race results were the reverse of Thursday's Potter Valley hill climb, the opening race of the five-race series.

Sheryl beat Kinsey by 35 seconds in the race, in which racers labored up 700 feet of elevation gain. Sheryl clocked 9:33.

In the men's competition, James Stull edged John Sindell by .4 seconds to win in 8:05.4.

Boutet flourishes

Maddy Boutet of Anchorage escaped in a breakaway pack Friday in Stage 3 of the Tour de Releve in Quebec, finished the 80-kilometer road race third in her age group and rocketed up to fourth place overall in her division midway through the six-stage bicycle race.

Boutet, 15, was clocked in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 44 seconds, four seconds off the lead in Friday's stage, which was held in rain and wicked wind, and included 3,000 feet of climbing.

Still, her effort was headstrong and resilient a day after enduring difficult circumstances in Stage 2's road race Thursday. Boutet locked handlebars with another rider in the front group, was rear-ended and ended up with a wobbly wheel that required a change, and left her out of contact with both the lead group and the chase pack. All that left Boutet in 17th overall.

But her effort Friday allowed her to jump 13 places up the standings entering Saturday's short time trial.
