Man arrested after overnight SWAT standoff in Anchorage

After a four-and-a-half-hour police standoff late Monday, officials arrested a drunken man who threatened to kill a woman and children inside his Spenard home, according to Anchorage police.

Officers responded to an incident on Chugach Way around 10:30 p.m. A woman and children were able to safely leave the house, but a man refused to come out, police spokesman Nelson Price said.

The woman reported the man was "heavily intoxicated and had been making verbal threats and was using a knife to cut up objects around the residence," Price said in a written statement.

The department's SWAT responded and tried to coax the man outside. Just before 3 a.m., SWAT went into the home and found Brach Cooper, 27, barricaded in a bedroom.

"He was compliant with police during his arrest," Price said.

Police charged Cooper with assault, family violence and malicious destruction of property.
