British-based artist Brigid Martin has a show at Alaska Pacific University's Grant Hall Gallery showcasing her work using the "Mische" technique. The antique system of layering on colors, glazes and egg tempera heightens the colors, among other things. It was popular among the Old Masters and only recently revived. Marlin's work is found in many international collections, including the National Portrait Gallery in London. She outlines the steps in the process at her website. Homer artist Karla Freedman's work is displayed in the Carr Gottstein Gallery.
Funereal finale
The last presentation of Stories in the Cemetery will take place 6 p.m. Sunday at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery. Actors will be portraying various former (and now very permanent) residents of Anchorage and telling their life stories next to their graves. Enter at the gate at Seventh Avenue and Cordova Street. Parking is available along the street and in the Office Depot lot. There is no charge for this tour, but donations for the actors are appreciated.
Classics in August
A new chamber music event will take place in Anchorage next week, presented by the Anchorage Fine Arts Society. The event opens with a concert by the Scott Chamber Players from Indiana at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Central Lutheran Church. They will perform selected movements from works by Mahler, Chopin, Brahms and Prokofiev among others. A house concert will take place 8 p.m. Wednesday and a concert including Shostakovich's Piano Quintet and Brahms' Piano Quartet in G minor will take place 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Alyeska Hotel, repeated the following day at the Anchorage Museum. Donations of $15 are requested, $10 for students and seniors. More information available here.
