Two 15-year-old girls walking on a paved bike path in South Anchorage on Friday evening were killed when what witnesses described as an out-of-control red pickup truck plowed into them, Anchorage police said.
Police identified the teenagers as Brooke McPheters and Jordyn Durr, both of Anchorage. The driver of the truck, whom police did not immediately identify, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The crash was reported at 6:45 p.m. at Abbott Road and 88th Avenue. That's where an "S" curve on Abbott Road connects it to Dimond Boulevard just east of the Seward Highway.
Officers discovered the pickup truck had swerved onto the sidewalk and struck the girls, then collided with a large wooden sign. Both girls were pronounced dead at the scene.
"Witnesses report the truck was traveling in a reckless manner when it appeared to lose control prior to leaving the roadway and striking the two teenagers as they were walking along the bike path," police said in a written statement sent out around 9:30 p.m.
Earlier, Dani Myren, a police spokeswoman, said investigators were still at work after 8 p.m. trying to determine the cause of the accident.
"It's still unfolding," she said.
