Palmer angler seizes lead in Seward Silver Salmon Derby

A new leader emerged Sunday in the 58th annual Seward Silver Salmon Derby.

Richard Jensen of Palmer hooked a 16.67-pound coho Sunday evening while fishing in Thumb Cove to steal the lead from an Anchorage woman.

Jensen's catch is bigger than last year's derby winner, which weighed 16.14 pounds. If no one catches a bigger silver before noon Sunday, Jensen will claim the derby's $10,000 first-place prize.

Dropping into second place with a 15.79-pound fish is Cathleen Vestal, who turned in her fish late Saturday, the opening day of the derby. In third place is Erik Johnson of Anchorage, Saturday's early leader with a 15.24-pounder.

None of the derby's 14 tagged fish, including one worth $50,000 and another worth a 2014 Chevy Silverado, have been caught.
