Out-of-town runners crashed the season-opening party Saturday at Bartlett High to dominate the girls competition at the Bartlett State Preview cross country meet.
Running on the same 5-kilometer course that will be used for the state championships later this season, girls from outside Anchorage claimed the top five spots.
Led by winner Alex Mathis, Wasilla put three runners in the top four to breeze to the team title. Mathis won in 19 minutes, 31.1 seconds, followed by Glennallen's Briahna Gerlach (19:50), Wasilla's Peggy Mathis (19:59), Wasilla's Mariah Burroughs (20:00), and lathrop's Brooke Lizotte (20:03).
In sixth place was South's Kaitlyn Bailey (20:04), the top Anchorage finisher.
In the boys race, Grace Christian's Daniel Servanti edged South's Derek Steele by 2.9 seconds, winning in 16:46.5.
South took the boys team title and the Grace Christian boys and girls both posted top-three team finishes -- the Grizzlies were second among girls and third among boys.
A couple of fast times were recorded in the open races. West's Ursula Volz paced the girls in 20:21.1, and West's Finn Walker took the boys title in 17:17, just ahead of teammate Brian Britt (17:30).
