Anchorage police make 33 weekend DUI arrests

Anchorage Police made 34 DUI arrests this weekend as part of a national campaign to crack down on impaired driving.

This was 12 more DUIs than made on the previous weekend, and corresponded with the launch of the department's new community involvement program, said police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro.

On Friday, police deployed dozens of civilian volunteers to prowl the city in unmarked cars to search for drunken drivers.

"Having an extra set of eyes for Anchorage Patrol Officers proved to be valuable," Castro said in a prepared statement. "Dispatch received approximately 16 calls of suspicious impaired drivers and an additional 15 calls related to other problems... One volunteer call led police to a DUI arrest on Friday evening."

The department also added five extra DUI patrols, which will continue through Labor Day.
