Letter: Citizen patrols for DUI offenders is knee-jerk reaction to tragedy

The idea of putting volunteers out on the street late at night to report potential DUI offenders is yet another knee-jerk reaction to recent tragic accidents. While punishment is important in these matters, even more so is education and treatment. Until lawmakers and police chiefs realize this and actually find new ways to create treatment centers, educational programs, and yes have some punishment, nothing will change.

Pitting neighbor against neighbor is not the way, almost as bad as one volunteer bragged in a recent ADN article ... that she was going to bring her Rottweiler along on her wannabe cop patrol. ... Does this really make Anchorage a better place?
