Wow, the Stockton Thunder talent pipeline keeps flowing north.
First, UAA hired Matt Thomas, the former Thunder coach, as its new bench boss in the offseason.
Today, the ECHL's Alaska Aces announced they have hired Mike Benton, the now-former Stockton broadcaster, as the new voice of the club, as well as its director of media relations. Benton is a former winner of the ECHL's Media Relation's Award of Excellence and has called several ECHL All-Star Games.
Benton, 32, replaces Josh Bogorad, who is outta here soon after three seasons to take a radio gig with the NHL's Dallas Stars.
Benton, of course, is familiar with the Aces and Sullivan Arena, having made a million trips here in previous seasons. And, of course, the Thunder eliminated the Aces from the Kelly Cup playoffs last spring on their way to their first Kelly Cup Finals appearance -- spoiler alert: The Reading Royals seized the Cup.
Anyhow, Benton had been with Stockton for all eight of its ECHL seasons since the club debuted. Good dude, very professional, and will now be sitting to The Blog's right, instead of his left, during games at Sullivan. (Well, unless, he comes in and switches things up).
In any event, Cowbell Crew, welcome the new guy.
And, look, if this Stockton pipeline thing is a trend, Garet Hunt might as well pack a bag.
Oh, sure, Aces fans love to boo Hunt, Stockton's captain. But if that cat played for the Aces, he'd be a cult hero in a hockey heartbeat.
