Two matches into the season, it's sweep or be swept for the UAA volleyball team.
The Seawolves beat Chaminade in three sets Friday night, one night after falling in three sets to BYU-Hawaii, the fifth-ranked team in NCAA Division II volleyball.
The hitting woes that doomed UAA on Thursday were remedied Friday, for both the team and sophomore hitter Katelyn Zanders of Anchorage.
After posting a negative attack percentage the night before, Zanders came out on fire, slamming five kills in the opening set of UAA's 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 win over Chaminade.
At one point in the match she was hitting better than .500 percent and her final attack percentage topped .300, UAA coach Chris Green said.
"We played a lot better," he said. "We were a lot more efficient. They stepped up after (Thursday night), especially Katelynn."
UAA used two setters -- senior Siobhan Johansen and freshman Morgan Hooe -- all three sets. "It was good," Green said. "It kept the other team off-balance having three hitters in the front row on all six rotations."
Brooke Pottle, a junior transfer, turned in another good hitting performance, and Julia Mackey had some timely kills at the end of the match.
On Thursday, UAA lost 25-22, 25-17, 25-18 to BYU-Hawaii, which returns two All-Americans from the team that played in last season's national semifinals.
BYU, the defending West Region champion, got a stellar performance from All-American junior Stella Chen, a two-time Pac West Conference player of the year. Chen ripped 12 kills, made only two errors on 28 attempts for a .357 attack percentage and totaled 15 digs.
Michelle Chen, BYU's other All-American, dished out 27 assists.
UAA threatened in every set, but hitting errors doomed the Seawolves. They posted a team attack percentage of .062, totaling 26 errors against 33 kills.
The Seawolves wrap up their Hawaii trip Saturday with an afternoon match against Hawaii-Hilo.
