An Anchorage man convicted Wednesday of raping an intoxicated woman in a wooded area of the city in May 2011 faces a sentence of 40 to 60 years in prison, according to state prosecutors.

A jury found Matthew Alexie, 37, guilty of first-degree sexual assault after a two-week trial, the Anchorage District Attorney's Office said in a written statement.

Alexie and the woman were drinking together near the Anchorage jail when he raped her in the woods off Third Avenue, prosecutors said. He then left the area. The assault was reported to Anchorage police, and detective Brett Sarber led the investigation.

Alexie has a prior conviction from 1999 for second-degree attempted sexual abuse of a minor, according to court records.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge William Morse scheduled sentencing for Feb. 28.
