Letter: Wal-Mart is inviting mistakes

Wal-Mart has a right to expect sustainability for any fishery product they put on their shelves. But to rely on only one certification process, which is the Marine Stewardship Council, is an invitation for mistakes to be made and abuse.

The Alaska fisheries should be allowed to find a less expensive certification program that doesn't demand so much paperwork. To allow MSC to have the sole authority to slap their labels on to any foreign seafood product such as Russian pinks and not on Alaska salmon is absurd. Wal-Mart should stop the nonsense and allow other avenues of certification Then they should immediately start stocking their shelves with the Alaska salmon so many Americans enjoy.
