Alaska teams won two titles at last weekend's Klondike Trail of '98 International Road Relay, the annual 110-mile footrace that follows the trail of the gold rush stampeders from Skagway to Whitehorse, Yukon.
The Classics of Anchorage won the mixed masters division, and Team 8 of Juneau won the mixed division.
The 10 members of the Classics — Steve Gilles, Patricia Shipley, Tim Middleton, John Brewer, Karl Volz, Jim Falconer, Ric Wilson, Paul Bly, Guadalupe Marroquin and Heather Aften of Anchorage — combined for a time of 14 hours, 50 minutes, 39 seconds for their win.
In the mixed division, Team 8 — Matt Callahan, Justin Dorn, Hunter Brown, Hilary Young, Molly Krehlik, Gabe Hayden, Gregory Frank, Shannon Gress, Jesse Stringer and Bryce Iverson — posted a winning time of 12:22:46.
The race began Friday night in Skagway and took teams over the famous White Pass, through British Columbia and into the Yukon. It finished Saturday in Whitehorse on the banks of the Yukon River.
The 10-leg relay begins at sea level and climbs 1,004 feet in the first two legs. Each team is allowed one support vehicle.
The open division title went to the Scarecrows of Whitehorse, which recorded a time of 11:12:44.
