From the Redoubt Reporter: Homer's Ring of Fire Meadery, winner of international awards for its products, is closing after owners Rachel and Laurence Livingston were unable to find a buyer. "We really struggled with the decision on whether to expand our business or close the doors," they told Bill Howell, the Reporter's "Drinking on the Last Frontier" columnist. "As always, it takes money to make money and we just decided we did not want to go into substantial debt in order to expand the business. It was a risk we were just not willing to take. The business has been for sale for quite awhile but the right buyers have yet to come our way." Howell says the couple has already left Homer for Corvallis, Ore., where Laurence has taken a job as head brewer with Sky High Brewing.
In a 2006 interview, Laurence Livingston told the Homer Tribune he'd been making mead long before opening the meadery.
