Denali Artist-in-Residence Applications due by Sept. 30
Denali National Park and Preserve is seeking applications from visual artists and writers for the 2014 Artist-in-Residence Program. This program provides the opportunity for established artists and writers to use an historic roadside cabin as a base to explore and seek inspiration from the park. Many of the works created by previous artists-in-residence are displayed in the Denali Visitor Center and the Eielson Visitor Center.
Selected artists reside in the East Fork cabin, located at Mile 43 on the park road, for a ten day period between June and mid-September. In return for their residency, each artist donates a piece of artwork or written piece inspired by their time in the park to the park's collection. Artists also offer a public presentation at the end of their residency.

Captain Cook Walking Tour, 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily, Alaska Public Lands Information Center, 605 W. Fourth Ave. Join National Park rangers as they tell the stories of early explorers who came Alaska. As you walk the streets of downtown Anchorage, you will learn about the lives of early Alaska Natives, discuss symbols used in totem poles, touch a sea otter pelt, and visit the Captain Cook statue at Resolution Park. Let Every Woman Know -- Alaska is partnering with the Alyeska Climbathon to host a gynecologic cancer awareness event and fundraiser as part of the Globeathon, a movement with over 80 countries coming together during the month of September, Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. Participants will climb North Face Trail, ascending 2.5 miles gaining 2,000 vertical feet from the Hotel to the top of the mountain, and take the tram down as many times as they can in a 10 hour period. $50 registration fee.
