Sports playbook: Sept. 19-25

Arrr you ready for ...

It's Talk Like a Pirate Day, which appropriately begins with a day game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres in Pittsburgh. The big game in Pennsylvania is at night when former Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid returns with an undefeated Kansas City Chiefs team. 4:30 p.m., NFL Network (cable channel 37)

Meanwhile, we asked an old salt to find pirate connections in Alaska sports, and blimey if he didn't come through with some good ones:

• McKinley climbing legend Ray Genet was nicknamed Pirate.

• Akiak musher Mike Williams Jr. has a lead dog named Pirate.

• The Seton Hall Pirates won the 1988 Great Alaska Shootout.

• Aces goaltender Gerald Coleman used to play for the Portland Pirates of the AHL.

Meet the new boss

UAA's new athletic director, Keith Hackett, will do a meet-and-greet with the public at the UAA/APU Consortium Library. Anyone is welcome. 3:30-5 p.m., Lew Haines Meeting Room (room 307).

Playbook extra: the late Lew Haines is a former UAA athletic director and the grandfather of Olympic skier Kikkan Randall.

Game of the year (so far)

No. 1 South takes on No. 2 Service in a game that could be a sneak preview of the state championship (or the semifinals, depending on how the bracket works out).

South (4-1) is the defending state champion and Service (4-1) was the 2011 state champ. The teams have met in the last two state title games. 7 p.m., Anchorage Football Stadium.

A mountain, a festival and bikes

The inaugural Mountain Bike Festival wraps up a three-day run at Alyeska on Sunday with a day's worth of fun: an enduro race at 10 a.m., a skills competition at 2 p.m., and at 3 p.m., everyone's favorite, the pop-a-wheelie contest. Register 60 minutes before each event at the Daylodge Bike Hub.

Broncos vs. Raiders

Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos try to run their record to 3-0 in a Monday Night Football game against the Oakland Raiders. 4:40 p.m., ESPN (cable 34).

Gear up for snow

Learn about fat tires, studded tires and dressing for cold weather at a free winter bike clinic. 7:15 p.m., Trek Bicycle Store, 530 E. Benson.
