Today's wine takes us off the beaten path. It is a big sturdy red from Campania, Italy, called Aglianico. This antique grape has been around since Roman times. The 2010 produced by Terredora Dipaolo yields a rustic cedar plank spicy nose. Lots of non-fruit characteristics here. The mouth has an immediate tannin and cherry-raspberry fruit. The finish is again more cedar, herb and leather, but balanced with fruit and held together by a lovely tannin grit. This wine is an experience. Serve with bold dishes, red sauces and grilled meats. Costs about $20.
