APD: Man dead after he was 'severely assaulted'

The case involving a man found "severely assaulted" outside a building on Tudor Road is being investigated as a homicide, Anchorage Police said Wednesday morning.

Few details were immediately available. An employee at the Anchorage Community Mental Health Services building, 2735 Tudor Road, called Anchorage police at 6:51 a.m. Police gave the employee instructions to perform CPR, said police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro. He "appeared to have been severely assaulted," she said.

The man was pronounced dead at a hospital, Castro said.

Detectives are investigating the death as a homicide, she said.

Police have identified the man through his fingerprints, but have not yet notified his next of kin, said APD Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz.

The police are not releasing how the man was injured, how many people assaulted him or if the man was homeless, Markiewicz said.

The Anchorage Community Mental Health Services helps people to deal with mental illness by providing individuals with housing, giving them counseling and coordinating medical services to those who need them.

He said the U-Med area is a high-traffic part of town for homeless people because of the Anchorage Gospel Rescue Mission's presence.
