Saxophonist Rick Zelinsky and crew kick off a round of performances starting at 7 p.m. Friday (Sept. 27) at Sullivan's. In honor of piano bop giant Bud Powell's birthday; he would have been 89. Expect some special attention from pianist Kevin Barnett.

Barnett will sit out Saturday at Sullivans as Zelinsky, Pat Owens, Dirk Westfall & Brandon Cockburn concentrate on a tribute to Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker.

From the rehearsal photo, we're guessing bass player Joel Stamoolis and drummer Robert Arms will join the team for the next installment in the "Jazz Masters" series, this time saluting Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond (with a few of Rick's own compositions tossed in). There will be three performances of this edition, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at Tap Root; 7 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Trinity Presbyterian and 4 p.m. Oct. 6, a Sunday in the UAA Arts Building recital hall.
