Dimond captures Spiketacular volleyball crown

Defending state volleyball champion Dimond topped a field of 21 teams Saturday at the West Spiketacular, a two-day tournament at West High.

Dimond beat Kodiak 20-25, 25-17, 17-15 in the championship match, its second victory in Saturday's bracket play. Earlier, it swept West in a semifinal match.

Leah Swiss supplied 20 kills and 17 digs in the title match. Chrisalyn Johnson added 11 kills and 16 digs, Jenna Mixson dished out 19 assists and Heidi Andrus came up with 18 digs for the Lynx, who were missing prominent middle blocker Rohyn Huss, who was away on a trip.

"I'm just really proud of the team," said Dimond coach Kim Lauwers. "They worked hard and they worked together, whether they were on the court or on the bench."

Other winners Saturday included Skyview in the silver bracket and East in the bronze bracket.

Skyview needed three sets to get by Grace Christian 2-1 in the final match and East defeated Barrow 2-1.

The West Spiketacular is the biggest volleyball tournament in the state, with teams coming from all over the state. Friday's pool play divided the teams into groups of seven, with the top seven playing in Saturday's gold bracket, the middle seven competing in the silver bracket and the remaining seven fighting it out in the bronze bracket.
