Alaskans split doubleheader in Arizona tourney

The Alaska Baseball Academy Sockeyes split a pair of games Friday at the Arizona Senior Fall Classic in Peoria, Arizona. 

The Alaskans picked up a 5-4 win over a Las Vegas all-star team in the morning before suffering a 6-3 loss to a Los Angeles Dodgers scout team from Arizona.

In the win, Brian Way of Sitka nailed down the victory by pitching five strong innings. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound righthander notched five strikeouts while giving up a pair of walks. 

Scooter Bynum of Monroe went 2 for 4 with two stolen bases and scored a run. R.J. Dirschel of Eagle River and Ben Ross of Colony each collected singles, and Nick Jensen of South had a stolen base and scored a run. 

 In the loss to the Dodgers scout team, Joe Fitka of South took the loss. Fitka had five strikeouts in the first four innings but ran out of gas in the fifth, when the Arizona team scored three runs.

Erikson Fish of Sitka was 3 for 3 with two doubles and a run scored, Logan Williams of Bartlett hit a double and scored a run, and Way, Mitch Chausin of Wasilla and Elias Stratton of Palmer all contribued singles. 

Nearly 500 college and pro scouts are at the showcase tournament, where the Alaskans play a Saturday game against MVP Baseball, a nationally selected all-star squad.
