Police: Restaurant break-in turns to arson when burglars try to cover tracks

Burglars broke into the Serrano's Mexican Grill on East Northern Lights Boulevard early Friday, then lit a small fire and turned on all the faucets to cover their tracks, an Anchorage Police Department sergeant said.

An employee came to the restaurant at 7 a.m. to find a cabinet on fire, Sgt. Cameron Hokenson said. He said the burglars took about $300. Employees said some beers were missing from the restaurant.

Hokenson said police and firefighters found evidence of two men breaking in within an hour despite the fire and water damage. He declined to comment on what the evidence was.

The fire started in, and was mostly contained to, a cabinet on the right side of a desk unit.

Hokenson said the burglars entered the building by breaking a window on the south side of the restaurant. He said he didn't know if an alarm went off.

An investigation by police and the Anchorage Fire Department continued Friday morning.
