AK Beat: Winter can wait; week of warm temperatures expected in Alaska

Week of warm weather for Alaska: An unusual bend in high-altitude air currents is expected to bring warm and wet weather conditions to the Interior and Western Alaska, storminess in Southcentral, and an unseasonable lack of precipitation for Southeast. That's according to the National Weather Service, whose forecasters expect the jet stream's shift to bring the tropical moisture north all of next week. Temperatures should be near freezing on the North Slope, and in the 40s or higher for most parts of Alaska to the south, forecasters say. The weather pattern is expected to delay any snowfall in Southcentral Alaska. Get a full forecast from National Weather Service's lead meteorologist Dave Snider here.

Woman hit by cab seriously injured: An unidentified woman hit by a Bethel cab early Saturday was flown to Anchorage to get medical treatment for serious injuries, according to Bethel police. Chief Larry Elarton wrote in a statement that police are calling the Alaska Native woman, who is in her 20s or 30s and not carrying identification, "Jane Doe" for now. An officer learned that she "abruptly appeared" in front of the Quayana Cab on State Highway in front of Raven Road just before 4 a.m. Saturday. The taxi hit the woman, but there were no citations for reckless driving because foul play is not suspected, Elarton wrote. The driver was fully cooperative with police, the chief said. Medics rushed the woman to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, and police said she was then flown to a hospital in Anchorage. The extent of her injuries was unknown later Saturday, Elarton wrote.

Alaskan Bar embroiled in reality TV brouhaha: Former Alaskan Bar manager Lane Taylor was fired from his job recently -- and it was all caught on camera as part of the reality show "Hotel Impossible." Taylor and other former employees -- 80 percent of the bar staff left after filming, a claim the current general manager disputes --- said they felt pressured to be on the show. General manager Joshua Adams declined to comment on Taylor's claim that he was fired for choosing not to appear on a controversial segment of reality TV until the show airs in April. "I can't talk about that. It's too juicy on the show," he told the Juneau Empire, adding that to reveal things now would "ruin the show."
