Alaska baseball team falls 4-2 in final game in Arizona

The Alaska Baseball Academy Sockeyes finished their run in the Arizona Senior Fall Classic baseball tournament with a loss on Sunday, despite four strong innings from pitcher Nick Jensen of South.

Under Armour, a national select team, beat Alaska 4-2.

Jensen struck out eight in four innings but got poor run support — the Sockeyes left 11 runners on base in the eight-inning game.

The 67-team tournament was a showcase for high school players, who got a chance to perform in front of numerous Major League Baseball and college scouts.

Scooter Bynum of Monroe continued to impress at the plate, leading off the game with a stand-up triple. He finished the tournament with a .444 batting average, one home run, two triples and one double in 18 at-bats.

“Scooter drew as much or more attention than any player,” Alaska coach Tony Wylie said in an email.

Sitka’s Brian Way contributed a triple, Ketchikan’s Nathan Bonck doubled and Ben Ross of Colony, Erickson Fish of Sitka and Alex Hess of Sitka each singled.

“We had some great players,” said Wylie, whose roster included six juniors and three sophomores.

“I have high expectations again for next year’s team.”
