A 36-year-old Anchorage man was found shot to death in an alley in the Fairview neighborhood early Sunday, police said.
By the end of the day, a 73-year-old resident of a nearby apartment complex had been arrested for murder.
Police say the killing appears to be drug-related.
Officers were called to the 900 block of Ingra Street at 3:30 a.m. Sunday after a report of gunfire, said APD spokeswoman Dani Myren Sunday.
Shortly after shots were fired, witnesses reported seeing one man run out of a tan fourplex apartment at 915 Ingra Street and get in a blue sedan.
Another man, identified by police as Sean Mulgrew, was seen running from the apartment down an alley, leaving a trail of blood behind him.
Mulgrew succumbed to gunshot wounds in the alley near Juneau Street, police said.
Police arriving on the scene followed the blood trail to the apartment of Johnie Jones, 73.
They found Jones "wiping fresh blood off the inside of the building's main door," according to an APD release.
Jones was arrested on charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence, according to police.
James Huguley, who owns and lives at a property next door, said he was saddened but unsurprised by the violence in his backyard.
Huguley said the apartment building and alley have earned a reputation as the site of drug deals.
He said he'd picked up empty plastic baggies and syringes and chased people off the property, worried about the safety of his own tenants next door.
"The police cruise the street," he said. "But they don't do the alleyway, and that's where all the trouble is at."
The woman listed as the owner of the apartment complex, Jeanette Johnson, said she didn't know anything about the killing or reports of drug dealing and was not directly involved in managing the property.
Jones is being held at the Anchorage Jail without bail.
