Thompson's 34 points help UAA men bury alumni

Travis Thompson, who sat out last season as a redshirt, marked his return to the UAA basketball team Friday by pumping in a game-high 34 points in the annual Green-Gold alumni game.

Thompson, a junior from Dimond, helped the Seawolves to a 120-91 win at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Brian McGill, a sophomore who sat out last year after transferring from league rival Western Oregon, made an impression in his UAA debut with 23 points and nine assists. Kyle Fossman, a senior from Haines, added 20 points, eight assists and no turnovers.

Thompson and Haines were deadly from long range. Thompson, a 6-foot-1 guard, hit 12 of 16 shots from the field, including 8 of 10 from 3-point range, and Fossman was 6 of 10 behind the arc.

Teancum Stafford, a returning starter, tallied 13 points and seven rebounds, and Brad Mears, a newcomer at center, furnished seven points and six rebounds.

Leading the alumni were former All-American Carl Artz of Valdez, who dropped in 18 points on 6 of 9 shooting, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out four assists, and Lonnie Ridgeway of Anchorage, who finished with 18 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

The alumni team featured four players from UAA's 2008 NCAA Division II national semifinal team — Arts, Ridgeway, McCade Olsen (13 points, 6 rebounds) and Doug Hardy (9 points, 5 assists). Liam Gibcus, a starter from last season, added 14 points.

The Seawolves, who were picked to finish second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's preseason coaches' poll, will play two more exhibition games before opening the season. They play Brigham Young on Nov. 2 and The Masters College of California on Nov. 4. Both are road games.
