Eagle River's Smith takes CIC all-around crown

Eagle River's Mackenzie Smith won two events and finish second in the other two to capture the all-around championship at Saturday's Cook Inlet Conference gymnastics championships at Dimond High.

Smith scored 36 points to turn back South's Tena Newhouse in the all-around battle. Newhouse, who won the uneven parallel bars, finished with 35.8 points.

Smith dominated in balance beam with a 9.85 -- the meet's highest score -- and scored 9.7 to win floor exercise.

Newhouse's 8.85 topped the uneven parallel bars, and Service's Kyla Gongora took the vault title with an 8.45.

South, which got a third-place all-around performance from Jojo Mills, cruised to the team championship with 220.15, beating Service by more than 15 points. Dimond claimed third place.
