Liam Ortega of Fairbanks placed 25th in the men’s 500 meters Saturday at the U.S. distance speedskating championships in Salt Lake City.
Ortega, 28, finished in 38.71 seconds. Winner Mitchell Whitemore clocked 34.81.
A member of the 2007 U.S. National Team, Ortega suffered a serious brain injury in an on-ice accident in 2008 and is still regaining his speed and form.
“Good progress on technical sides, speed still on it’s way,” Ortega tweeted after the race.
He placed 14th in Friday’s 5,000 meters.
