Ross, Garrard pace Alaskans in Maui

Will Ross and Emma Garrard of Anchorage were the top Alaskans at last weekend's Xterra World Championships, an off-road triathlon in Maui.

Ross placed 22nd, and was the third-best American, in the race, which consisted of a 1,500-meter swim, 31-kilometer mountain bike and 10-kilometer trail run. He finished in 2 hours, 51 minutes, 9 seconds; winner Ruben Rufaza of Spain won in 2:34:34.

Garrard claimed fifth place among women in 3:01:49. Victory went to Nicky Samuels of New Zealand in 2:57:48.

Four Alaskans grabbed top-three finishes in their age groups — Andy Duenow (second in men's 45-49 age group in 3:12:55; Danelle Winn (second in women's 45-49 in 3:39:38; Amber Stull (second in women's 35-39 in 3:43:03) and Jens Beck (third in men's 40-44 in 2:59:33.
