Alaska's top players featured in North-South Football Classic

There were football highlights aplenty Saturday at The Dome, where the Alaska Shriner’s put on the North-South Football classic.

There were three all-star games between teams representing north and south for the small schools, large schools and flag football.

Powered by 257 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns from Eagle River High’s Ed Hall, the north team won the large-school event 55-23. Chugiak’s Gabe Mingeldorff added a touchdown and Wasilla’s Cash McGregor made 14 tackles and an interception for the north squad.

Service quarterback C. J. Toomer led the south team with three passing touchdowns and 178 yards.

Monroe’s Scooter Bynum helped the north team win the small-school game 40-30 by running a kickoff return 88 yards for a touchdown and hauling in an 89-yard reception for a score.

The south side won the flag football affair 28-0, thanks to Dimond’s Tara Thompson scoring two touchdowns, Dimond’s Vanessa Tufaga adding another and Mariah Williams tacking on the last.
