ANCHORAGE
Maj. Gen. Thomas H. Katkus, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard, will host a Veterans Day ceremony at the Alaska National Guard armory on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Fort Richardson gate access starts at 9 a.m.
The ceremony will include the presentation of the 2013 Governors' Veterans Advocacy Award by Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell and a keynote address by Verdie Bowen, State Veterans Affairs director.
Immediately following the Veterans Day ceremony, Canadian Forces will conduct a Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery.
The East High Student Government has a Veterans Day commemoration beginning at 9 a.m. in the high school commons. A tradition since 2004, students write the names of every soldier who has made the ultimate sacrifice since the previous year's commemoration. Students read the names aloud. Participants then move outdoors, where a student plays taps and 100 colored balloons are released: red, white and blue for the U.S. flag, and gold for those who will not return.
VFW Post 1685 plans a free dinner for veterans, hosted by the VFW Auxiliary, at 6 p.m. Monday 1200 W. 33rd Ave.
MAT-SU
Honor Ceremony, 11 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Wall of Honor near the Mat-Su Medical Center, off the Parks Highway. After the ceremony, VFW 9365 hosts an open house with free food at 1 p.m., 301 E. Lakeview Ave.
