Letter: It pays to educate

The only legitimate task of a government is to take care of its people. The Parnell administration has led the fight to dumb down and financially strangle public education in Alaska. As a community, we need to keep up the pressure on our elected officials to make funding of education a priority, rather than giving away billions to oil companies and splurging on boondoggle projects such as tennis courts and a bridge across Knik Arm.

There can be little doubt that our state and city governments have been co-opted by interests that fail to reflect the needs of our children and our community. The backbone of a strong democracy is a well-funded public education system. It is easier to build strong children than it is to repair broken people!
