Temperatures will bottom out throughout state as cold air hits

Weather forecasters are calling for temperatures to drop to minus 5 degrees in Anchorage over the weekend and possibly beyond.

A high pressure ridge is breaking down over Anchorage and another high pressure ridge over the western Aleutian Islands is bringing cold, dry air from the northwest, said Dave Stricklan, National Weather Service forecaster.

In Anchorage, temperatures will rise to between 15 and 20 degrees Sunday only to fall back to minus 5 degrees Sunday night, he said.

Temperatures over the next week throughout interior Alaska will peak in the single digits, maybe the teens, he said.

Stricklan said Anchorage will have a mostly clear sky and no sign of significant snow over the next week.

Through Thursday, he said, temperatures in Anchorage will reach the teens and 20s, with lows between 5 and minus 5 degrees.
