Alaska politicians, organizations unite for Philippines, western Alaska fundraiser

A long list of Alaskan politicians and organizations have united to host a benefit Tuesday for the victims of the typhoon in the Philippines and storms in western Alaska.

The event, "An Evening of Hope," started with Bill Walker and Craig Fleener, independent candidates for governor and lieutenant governor, and has since grown to have more than 15 co-hosts, including Democrats and Republicans vying for the same office, like lieutenant governor candidates Sen. Hollis French, Sen. Lesil McGuire and Bob Williams.

"So we just thought ... let's sort of check our initials at the door and do something for the greater cause," Walker said.

Hosts also include the Alaska Federation of Natives, Alaska Village Initiatives and Alaska Federation of Filipino Americans.

The benefit is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sizzlin' Cafe, 346 E. Fiufth Ave., and will feature appetizers and cultural entertainment. The donations raised will be split in half between relief efforts in the Philippines and western Alaska, Walker said.
