Troopers: Boy, 6, stable after shooting himself while playing with pistol

A 6-year-old boy from the Western Alaska village of Kwethluk is in serious but stable condition after accidentally shooting himself Monday morning, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers said his father, 36, reported at 9:15 a.m. that his son had been shot. Investigation revealed the boy was playing with a loaded .22-caliber pistol when it fired into his abdomen, troopers said Wednesday.

The boy was airlifted to Bethel and then transported to the Alaska Native Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to repair internal injuries, troopers said.
