Red-hot Pepperdine downs Denver in Shootout

Pepperdine made some waves Friday at the Shootout.

Actually, the Waves made some shots. And missed very few.

Pepperdine set a Shootout record by hitting 71.4 percent of its shots in a 68-56 consolation-round victory over Denver.

The red-hot Waves netted 25 of 35 shots to break the old record of 69.8 (37 of 53) set in 1986 by an Iowa team led by Ray Marble. Iowa set the mark in a 103-80 championship-game win over Northeastern.

Pepperdine's Stacy Davis, a 6-foot-6, 245-pound sophomore, redeemed himself from a subpar game the day before by burying 8 of 9 field goals for 22 points.

Pepperdine hit 15 of 21 in the first half to race to a 38-15 halftime lead. It connected on 10 of 14 in the second half.

The Pioneers hit 27.3 percent of their first-half shots and 33.9 percent for the game.
