Cold weather chills Anchorage through Monday

You didn't need a thermometer to know Anchorage was cold on Saturday. You could see it.

A high-pressure system has chilled much of Alaska with subzero temperatures, including in much of Anchorage. Relief is expected by Monday, a forecaster with the National Weather Service said Saturday.

One spot in East Anchorage recorded 17 degrees below zero early Saturday.

It was colder elsewhere: 41 below near Fort Yukon, said Chris Cox, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fairbanks. In the Interior, it hit minus 22 in Fairbanks, minus 35 in Coldfoot and minus 36 degrees in Bettles.

"They're chilly, don't get me wrong," Cox said about the temperatures. "But they're not unusual for Alaska."

Anchorage should see temperatures slowly climb to highs between 10 and 15 degrees Sunday and highs in the 20s on Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Reach Tegan Hanlon at thanlon@adn.com or 257-4589.
