Get a taste of what won 'Cupcake Wars' for Kastle's Kreations

Anchorage will get a chance to sample the desserts that won "Cupcake Wars" for Alaska's Kastle Sorensen on Thursday.

Sorensen will have her Kastle's Kreations cupcake truck parked outside Chilkoot Charlie's 12-4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5. She'll offer 12 flavors, including the four she prepared on the popular Food Network cooking contest. The finale, in which Sorensen won the $10,000 top prize, aired Nov. 23.

Reached by phone, Sorensen said that strawberry shortcake, churro and German chocolate part were part of her regular line-up before she went on "Cupcake Wars." In the show, she and assistant Amy Grue had to make a cupcake using a "mystery ingredient" which, it turned, was smoked salmon. Sorensen will be selling the resulting creation -- a lemon, rosemary, and smoked salmon cupcake -- tomorrow, and said it will be in her regular rotation from now on.

She cautioned that it's not a typical bite of cake.

"It's more of an appetizer cupcake than a dessert cupcake," she said. The cream cheese and chive frosting isn't sweetened, and the center has a mascarpone and salmon filling, similar to what you'd eat on a bagel.

All the cupcakes are $3.50, except the salmon cupcake, which is $4.50. Sorensen said she'll have 800 cupcakes available, but she's already sold almost half her stock through Facebook page pre-orders. All four recipes are online at foodnetwork.com for home bakers wanting to give them a try.
