School bus strikes, kills moose in Big Lake

A Mat-Su school bus not carrying children hit and killed a moose Tuesday morning, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers said the First Student school bus was traveling on Big Lake Road near the Wasey Way intersection around 6:15 a.m. when it struck the animal. The bus had minor damage. Only the driver was on the bus and there were no injuries reported, troopers said.

The moose was found dead in a ditch, said Megan Peters, troopers spokeswoman.

The bus was eventually headed to Houston High School by 7:30 a.m., said Chris Remick, supervisor of the school district's public transportation department. Remick said it was still early on the bus's schedule and it was about 20 minutes away from its first stop.

First Student declined to comment on the incident.
