WHY
"Topping out" is the term used by ironworkers to indicate that the final piece of steel has been hoisted into place on a building, bridge or other large structure. The building is not complete but has reached its maximum height. Guests were invited to sign the final steel beam that was put into place during the ceremony.
Once complete, the $78.25 million, 80,000 GSF Engineering & Industry Building will provide state-of-the-art laboratories, two classrooms enhanced for eLearning, five seminar and breakout rooms with interactive remote communication capability, a high-bay project design/assembly area, a small collaborative space with a coffee shop/vending area, and over 40 offices for faculty and staff.
The four-story Engineering & Industry Building is located south of the UAA Campus Bookstore and will connect to the UAA Health Sciences Building via a pedestrian sky bridge across Providence Drive. The building is scheduled to open its doors in fall 2015.
The Engineering & Industry Building is part of an engineering initiative to enhance facilities at UAA and UAF to train the next generation of Alaska engineers. At UAA, the initiative includes a planned renovation of the existing three-story School of Engineering Building (40,000 GSF) and a proposed multistory structured parking facility to accommodate the increased parking demand.
