4 hurt in morning collision on Northern Lights involving shuttle bus

An accident involving an Alaska Native Medical Center shuttle van sent several people to the hospital and briefly closed the eastbound lanes of Northern Lights Boulevard near Lake Otis Parkway on Monday morning, Anchorage police said.

The accident, reported at 8:02 a.m., sent three people in the van and the driver of a Dodge pickup to a hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening, police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said in an email Monday morning.

The van was eastbound with several people inside when it rear-ended the pickup, Castro said. Then the pickup rear-ended a Subaru in front of it.

Police shut down Northern Lights at 8:15 a.m. and rerouted traffic onto Princeton Way. The road reopened just after 9 a.m.

Police were investigating the accident. No citations had been filed as of 9:45 a.m. Monday.

There were four passengers and a driver in the van when the accident occurred, according to an ANMC statement emailed late Monday morning. The passengers were transported to the hospital's emergency room, the statement said. "Our primary concern is the safety of all involved in the accident," it said.

Their conditions were not immediately known.

Officers noted conditions on Northern Lights were "extremely icy" at the time of the accident, Castro said.
