Two Anchorage teenagers were rescued from Flattop Mountain late Thursday afternoon after becoming separated on a hike in cold, snowy weather, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Gaspar Gonzalez, 18, called troopers at 2:16 p.m. to report he had fallen and injured himself, said Megan Peters, troopers spokeswoman. He said his 19-year-old hiking partner, Nabil Falconer, was missing, she said. Temperatures were in the single digits with low clouds and snow, troopers said.
As darkness was falling, 11 volunteers with the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group responded around 4 p.m. at the request of troopers, Peters said.
It took them about 40 minutes to locate Gonzalez, who was able to walk out to the trail head despite minor injuries, troopers said. At 5:43 p.m., they found Falconer on "a steep and icy slope" on the north side of the mountain with mild hypothermia, Peters said.
"They had to help get him to the top of the mountain before assisting him down," she said.
Falconer exited the trail at 9:17 p.m. Neither hiker required medical attention, troopers said.
