Division of Insurance director quits; deputy director to temporarily step up

With the Alaska Division of Insurance director's last day on Thursday, the deputy director will take over the position temporarily.

Marty Hester, who started as deputy director a year ago, will be the acting director while hiring is under way, said state Commerce Commissioner Susan Bell.

"The recruitment process has no set timelines," she said "We are reviewing the resumes that have been submitted and encourage any other interested people to submit a resume to the DCCED (Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development) commissioner right away."

Bret Kolb, who led the state through the initial rollout of the Affordable Care Act and reviewed policies to ensure they complied with the federal law, resigned from his director position at the end of November to take a job with a ministry. He will work as the director of business development for Palmer-based Victory Ministries of Alaska.

Hester, who works out of Juneau, previously worked at Progressive Insurance before joining the division. With the upcoming legislative session, Hester will increase his focus on the budget and legislation, Bell said.
