Letter: Icebreaker overhaul

The ongoing saga of a Russian research ship stuck in the ice and would-be icebreakers also getting stuck in the ice and unable to reach the Russian ship should be considered to be warning about the gross inadequacy of U.S. icebreakers, all of which are inferior to ones that tried to rescue the Russian ship.

We need the largest Finnish-designed, American-built icebreaker with a General Dynamics nuclear propulsion system for service in the Arctic Ocean off Alaska's coast before any further attempted oil and gas development there.

Further, when they cannot attain 10 percent recovery of spilled oil in warm waters how is it they are going to clean up a spill in Arctic waters?
