Letter: Slow down, Alaska

My husband and I were driving down the Eagle River Hill last week and hit a patch of ice. Our trailer with our snowmachines jackknifed and caused our pickup truck to do a turn around and ended up in the ditch on the opposite side of the road. Immediately folks came to our aide. The police were with us immediately, also. One family was going towards Anchorage and saw us and drove to the first turnaround and came back to assist us. They drove me to Eagle River to a restaurant to stay warm and to make sure I was OK.

We wish to thank everyone who stopped to assist us.

As we were waiting in the ditch deciding what to do I was observing folks driving down the hill. Most of the drivers were going well over the speed limit, one hitting our flares because he was driving too far over on the shoulder. (Yes, the shoulder where we were still in the ditch.) One driver actually made the hill into a three lane road by driving on the shoulder! Too bad we have some drivers that do not drive to the conditions and are in such a hurry to reach their destination.
