Badgers deny UAA skaters 4-3

A night after their stunning loss to the UAA hockey team, the Wisconsin Badgers needed a little help from the Seawolves to claim a 4-3 win and avoid a weekend sweep Saturday in Madison, Wis.

Wisconsin, the 13th-ranked team in the nation, scored the winning goal on a third-period shot that ricocheted off one of the Seawolves.

The nonconference win in front of a Kohl Center crowd of 10,309 denied UAA its first sweep at Wisconsin since 2000.

The Seawolves (9-9-2 overall), who were coming off a 3-2 Friday night victory that was their first in Madison since 2005, twice forged one-goal leads.

They grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Chase Van Allen fed Blake Tatchell on a 3-on-2 rush. Tatchell's goal was his second of the weekend.

Wisconsin (11-6-1) scored twice in the final 94 seconds of the period to take a 2-1 lead. Jake McCabe tied it at 18:26 and assisted on Tyler Barnes' goal with 22 seconds left.

UAA came right back when Matt Bailey scored twice in a 98-second span give the Seawolves a 3-2 lead eight minutes into the second period. Bailey's first strike, at 6:33, was UAA's first shorthanded goal of the season.

Wisconsin knotted it 3-3 on Eddie Wittchow's first goal of the season, at 14:11 of the second period.

McCabe supplied the game-winner at 6:26 of the third period. His shot from the right circle hit Tatchell, who was stationed outside the crease, and ricocheted into the net and gave McCabe a three-point night.

Chris Kamal took the loss in net, tallying 20 saves, including a couple spectacular ones that kept UAA in the game. The Seawolves pulled Kamal, who was in net for Friday's win, for an extra attacker in the final minute but couldn't capitalize.

Joel Rumpel stopped 26 shots for the Badgers.

UAA outshot Wisconsin for the second night in a row, 29-24.

Neither team scored on the power play, UAA failing on four chances and Wisconsin on six.

UAA returns to Western Collegiate Hockey Association action next weekend when it hosts Minnesota State.
