Competition heats up Frosty Bottom race

Tim Berntson outlasted a competitive field of fat-tire bikers Saturday to win the 44-mile Frosty Bottom race.

Bernsten made the trip from Kincaid Park to Hillside and back in just more than three hours, clocking a time of 3:00:01. Finishing 26 seconds later in second place was Jason Lamoreaux, who edged third-place Josh Chelf by three seconds.

Nearly 300 bikers, runners and skiers raced either 22 miles or 44 miles in the annual event sponsored by Chain Reaction Cycles, which this year used the event as a benefit for injured cyclist Luke Simpson, who suffered a traumatic brain injury on the Kincaid trails two months ago.

Bikers dominated the race in both numbers and performance. Of the 272 finishers, 217 were bikers. And all of the fastest times came from bikers.

Conditions were nearly ideal -- well-packed trails with good grip and mild temperatures.

Darcy Davis ruled the women's 44-mile bike race in 3:33:11, more than four minutes ahead of Amber Bethe. Wins in the 22-mile bike race went to Amber Stull (1:36:17) and Simon Lynn (1:35:55).

The closest race came in the women's 44-mile ski, which drew only two competitors who finished one second apart. Caroline Van Hemert's time of 6:00:46 gave her the win over Karen Loso. Dash Feirarbend took the men's 44-mile ski title in 4:09.23.

The 22-mile ski titles went to Kimberly Marek (3:14:13), the only woman in the race, and Seth Down (1:47:27).

In the 44-mile run, Shawn McTaggart (7:34:28) topped the women and Laron Thomas (6:10:21) paced the men. Sarah Tjompson (3:27:06) and Daniel Myers (2:59:21) won the 22-mile runs.
