Free screenings

Maybe you, like many Americans, resolved to lose weight, quit smoking, manage stress or otherwise improve your health in 2014. If you did -- or if you didn't -- a great way to kick off the new year is with a health screening. Sam's Club will host free health screenings for members and the public, including tests for glucose, total cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index and vision. Mensa Qualifying Test

What do professional domino-toppler Bob Speca, Jr., actress Geena Davis and 1983 National Amateur Heavyweight champion Henry Milligan have in common? They're all part of Mensa, an international organization for the super-smart (an IQ in the 98th percentile or higher is required to join). Want to know if your brain is just as big? Mensa Alaska will administer the test required for membership this weekend. Cost is $40 and applicants must bring a picture ID. Skijor Clinic

Want to learn to skijor but unsure how to work that whole dog/skis/harness/poles situation? Get some guidance from the Anchorage Skijor Club at their beginners' clinic. Fee is $25 (get $10 off club dues if you join). Participants should be able to skate ski to get maximum benefit from the outdoor portion of the clinic.
