Prep hockey: Wins for Chugiak, South, Homer

South 5, Lathrop 0

The South boys hockey team raced to a big early lead and shut out Lathrop 5-0 in a nonconference high school game at the Patty Center in Fairbanks.

Jared Cruz and Cayden Cahill accounted for three first-period goals, with Cruz striking first and Cahill following with back-to-back scores. After a scoreless second period, Brendan Jester hit for two goals in the final frame. Ben Trujillo finished with two assists.

South goalie Kevin Lake made 23 saves, and Lathrop goalie Ryan Ebanel made 32 saves.

Chugiak 4, North Pole 0

John and Sam Hammer each recorded goals Friday to help the Chugiak boys hockey team blank host North Pole 4-0 in a nonconference game at the Polar Ice Center.

Chugiak's first two goals came on power plays, with John Hammer opening scoring in the first-period. Adam Groendyke struck in the second period to put the Mustangs up 2-0, and Sam Hammer made it 3-0 with two seconds left in the period. Taylor Garner tacked Chugiak's last goal with less than two minutes to play in the third period.

North Pole goalie Allan Heineken made 28 saves.

Homer 5, East 1

Anton Kuzmin and Konstantin Ruetov each scored two goals and an assist Friday, fueling Homer's 5-1 nonconference hockey win over East at Ben Boeke Arena.

Kuzmin and Ruetov both supplied short-handed goals in the third period for the Mariners, who led 3-0 after a three-goal second period.

Tarino Tosi's goal for East came with a little more than four minutes in the game, ruining Markson Polushkin's shutout bid.

Polushkin finished with 22 saves, and East goaltender Blake Henderson had 12.
